KHRC was privileged to host a team of renowned scientists from TDR (Dr Olumide Ogundahunsi and Dr Tuoyo Okorosobo). They were accompanied by Dr. Margaret Gyapong, Director of the Dodowa Health Research Centre (DHRC).

TDR as part of the UNDP/WHO/PATH Access and Delivery Partnership (ADP) has been working with the Research and Development Directorate of the Ghana Health Service to build capacity for Implementation research (IR) as part of its strategy to improve access and delivery of interventions against malaria, TB and the NTDs.

The ADP through TDR supported part of the process that led to the Ghana National Health Research Agenda (2015 – 2018) document. They also supported a series of implementation research training workshops that led to the development of IR proposals, some barriers to effective control of malaria, TB, Yaws and Buruli ulcer in Dangme west district and the Greater Accra region in general.

Paramount on the  list of issues deliberated upon during their two-day visit to KHRC were discussions around the need for Implementation research (IR) , extending the Implementation Research capacity building activities to Kintampo in the middle belt of Ghana and the vast opportunities IR presents among others.

The visitors also took a tour around the Centre (KHRC) as part of their visit. At an evening cocktail meeting with senior staff of KHRC, members of the visiting team took turns to express their views concerning the current state of KHRC in terms of the kind of quality facilities, research and caliber of staff the team met on the job during the tour.

While praising the hardworking staff of the Centre the team also saw a visionary leader in the director of the KHRC who is most of the time able to “create big opportunities out of little ones unfolding” to keep the Centre running as one of the vibrant African-based research centres of excellence

The team has since left with a promise to always return to support in building on this new initiative.
