Cost-benefit analysis of arpraziquantel compared to standard of care for schistosomiasis among pre-school age children in Tanzania: an early health economic evaluation

15 October 2026

This study, conducted by the Health Intervention and Technology Assessment Program (HITAP) and Tanzania’s National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), examines the potential costs and benefits of introducing arpraziquantel (arPZQ), a new treatment for schistosomiasis among preschool-aged children in Tanzania. The findings suggest that delivering arPZQ through mass drug administration could generate substantial economic benefits, potentially reaching $16.39 for every $1 invested when longer-term impacts, including improved school attendance and future earnings, are considered. The study also assesses a test-and-treat approach, highlighting its potential suitability in areas with lower schistosomiasis prevalence.
