Implementation strategies for the introduction of the RTS,S/AS01 (RTS,S) malaria vaccine in countries with areas of highly seasonal transmission: workshop meeting report
24 August 2023This workshop was held in Dakar, Senegal, and online from 23–25 January 2023, on strategies for implementing the introduction of the RTS,S/AS01 (RTS,S) malaria vaccine in countries with areas of highly seasonal transmission. It aimed to share experiences from countries that have introduced the vaccine in routine child vaccination programmes, discuss challenges, lessons learned and research questions, towards facilitating the introduction of the RTS,S (and other malaria vaccines). Participants included representatives from Expanded Programmes on Immunization and National Malaria Control Programmes from 13 African countries, along with other stakeholders. The RTS,S vaccine is the first malaria vaccine to be recommended by the World Health Organization. Previous pilot implementations in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi demonstrated its effectiveness. Clinical trials in Mali and Burkina Faso indicated that giving the vaccine before high transmission seasons significantly reduced the incidence of clinical and severe malaria in children receiving Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention.
